Redevelopment of industrial site will help address critical housing needs in the area, La Crosse also earns a “Best Place to Live” honor

A new, mixed-use housing development in La Crosse is getting attention from around the state. The River Point District will be the largest urban redevelopment effort with more than 800 housing units and locations for offices, shops, and restaurants. The project is being built on a former 65 acre industrial site along the Mississippi River.

City officials say this will help address critical housing needs in the La Crosse area

A celebration at the first complex being built is set for Tuesday, May 7, at 10:30 am. The Driftless will include 100 units of senior housing and 20 affordable townhomes. It’s expected to open to residents by later this year.

Project managers say public and private sector partnerships continue to work together after acquiring and remediating the industrial property. The site also had to be raised above the 100-year flood plain before any construction could begin.

Best places to live list includes La Crosse

The La Crosse area has something else to brag about after it is the only Wisconsin city recently named to the top 50 list of “Best Places to Live” by Money Magazine.

Financial reporter Brenden Rearick describes La Crosse as picturesque and artsy with jobs, fishing, and craft beer. Criteria for the list includes affordability, good schools, strong job market, along with engaged citizens and receptive public officials.
